Chapter Chatters

Fall 2007

FRED

On Wednesday October 24th, SAI held its first pre-rush event. The rush process for SAI normally takes place once a year, in the spring. Rush activities include pizza parties, game night, and bowling. This year we decided to get a little head start on rush by having an informational meeting for any interested women. Five ladies gave short speeches on different aspects of the Zeta Epsilon chapter of SAI. Avonique Niehaus spoke on the various websites SAI has, that are all full of information about our own chapter, our province, and SAI in general. Anne Grobstich talked about some of the events and fundraisers we’ve done in the past year including Pizza Ranch and helping a Brownie troop get their music badge. Tami Rassman introduced some of our goals we hope to achieve this upcoming year, including more members and more social/volunteer opportunities. Jessica Cabalka talked about our upcoming Province Day in February. Overall it was very informational and successful as well as full of delicious treats for all! If you have any questions about the Spring Rush, please contact Megan Bartlett at megan-m-bartlett@uiowa.edu OR sai.zetaepsilon@gmail.com

Recitals

On November 4th a few SAI members put on a reception for the Saxophone Recital. One of the Saxophone Professors at Iowa contacted Vice President of Membership Megan Bartlett, also a saxophonist, to see if SAI would be interested or available to provide a reception after the 7pm. concert. President Jessica Cabalka and Treasurer Anne Grobstich purchased cheese and sausage with crackers as well as cookies and punch. Laura Anderson and Megan Bartlett also helped out with the arranging. The reception was held in the Student Lounge. SAI is always happy to help fellow professors and musicians in anyway they can. We were obliged when news of presenting a reception and would love to continue to volunteer in ways like this.

Pizza Ranch Fundraising

On Monday, November 5 we had a fundraiser at Pizza Ranch in Sycamore Mall. Most of the girls were able to stop by and help raise money for our organization. Considering it was a slow night, we made a pretty good profit, including generous tips. We had a fun time helping customers and singing to some lucky customers that requested soJ. Overall, I believe this was a fun time (Laura’s shirt anyone?) and that it truly helped with our sisterhood bonding. Afterwards, we went to enjoy some yummy KFC since we were not given any foodL. We have another Pizza Ranch fundraiser on Wednesday, December 5 and I only hope that we have an even better time, and raise more money, of course.

Hana's In Germany!

Aside from German, I’m also a Voice Performance Major and I’ve certainly got a couple musical experiences to share from my time here so far.  I’m a member of two choirs – both self-organized and self-funded ensembles open to anybody from the town.  Each choir rehearses only one night per week for two or two and a half hours and puts on two concerts at the end of the semester.  Other than these weekly meetings, each group has two “Probenwochenenden” (rehearsal-weekends) per semester.  A Probenwochenende basically includes two straight days of eating-sleeping-rehearsing constantly – they’re up in the mountains in the Black Forest, where there wouldn’t be anything else to do anyway.  I’ve been on one such weekend with each choir so far, and had lots of fun getting to know my fellow singers and work-work-working.
In general here’s what’s up: I’m doing this year abroad thing in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany and it is awesome.  Basically, if I have one piece of advice for any student at all it is this: if you possibly can, study abroad.  Even if you’re not studying a foreign language (there are numerous programs that are all in English), just do it.  Plan early, plan well and it will be an extremely rewarding experience.  I’m just beginning month six of my stay here and I wouldn’t change a thing.  I’m due to come back to Iowa City just before classes start in Fall 2008 and I already know that leaving here will not be easy.

President's Corner

This semester has gone great so far. Despite a few misunderstandings and a few projects that fell through the cracks I feel like we have done a good job bringing SAI back from a morale and financial slump. I am very proud of the way the girls have worked together with a positive attitude and a willingness to get things done.  Now as we wind down one semester and head into a long break I want to leave everyone with a few words:
I am extremely proud of all of you not only for what you have accomplished but for the women that you are. I am privileged to call you all my sisters and I want you all to know that so far this has been the best year of SAI that I have had. Please work with me in the coming months to make Province Day the best we can make it and to show just what Zeta Epsilon chapter can do. I apologize for any shortness or frustration in advance, but know that I appreciate and love every one of you.

In SAI,
~Jessica Cabalka
